What rides in my bag for this trip
Lila lives in her Béis weekender bag — same one I bring. For lodging, I start by browsing family-friendly hotels in Paris and narrow from there.
- EBAGS packing cubes — the system that has survived six summers of European travel.
- Apple AirTags 4-pack — one in every suitcase. Non-negotiable for connections through Heathrow or CDG.
- universal travel adapter — Type C and G in one plug, no fishing for the right prong.
- compression socks — I gave up pretending these are optional after age 35.
Why Paris is Perfect for Families
I'm not going to lie, Paris was the first European city I trusted to bring Lila to as a baby and the city we have returned to twice a year ever since. From the magical Jardin du Luxembourg with its puppet shows and pony rides to the awe-inspiring views from the Eiffel Tower, there's something for every age. Vivi, my Paris-based French translator friend, has been my fixer-in-chief on every visit and is the source of half of what's in this guide.
Best Neighborhoods for Families
The Marais (3rd and 4th arrondissements) offers flat, stroller-friendly streets with plenty of cafes and parks. Take Metro line 1 to Saint-Paul, not line 11, when you're heading there. A BABYZEN YOYO2 stroller folds to fit in overhead bins and handles Paris Metro stairs like a dream. Saint-Germain-des-Pres (6th) is charming and walkable with incredible bakeries that kids love. Le Bon Marche on the line 12 stop at Sevres-Babylone is the department store I actually shop at, not the chaos of Galeries Lafayette. For a quieter base, try the 7th arrondissement near the Champ de Mars.
One Geneviève rule for shopping: do not shop in the Galeries Lafayette tourist crush. The actual local boutiques are three blocks east. Walk five extra minutes. The selection is better and the prices are kinder.
What to Wear in Paris
Parisian style is effortlessly chic, and as a traveling mom, you can embrace it too. Think well-fitted jeans, a classic trench coat, comfortable ballet flats, and a structured anti-theft crossbody bag that keeps your hands free and your valuables safe from pickpockets. Skip overly casual athletic wear. A simple upgrade to dark jeans and a nice top makes a world of difference. Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable. I never leave the hotel without a compact first aid kit. Blisters from cobblestones are real. Don't forget a travel adapter. Bring a reusable water bottle for everyone. A good pair of kids headphones will keep your kid happy during travel days.
Must-Visit Spots with Kids
- Jardin du Luxembourg - Puppet shows, pony rides, and toy sailboats. The single best free thing in Paris with a kid.
- Musee d'Orsay - More kid-friendly than the Louvre and less crowded
- Canal Saint-Martin - Picnic along the water, watch the locks
- Cite des Sciences - A massive interactive science museum
The Pickpocket Warning Nobody Tells You
The Eurostar arrival hall at Gare du Nord is a pickpocket hot zone. The second you step off the train, eyes up. They work in pairs and target jet-lagged Americans with unzipped bags. The Trevi-Fountain-of-the-North, basically. The Metro Line 4 at Chatelet is the second-worst spot. Cross-body bag, zipped, in front, hand on it. I've seen Geneviève intervene with a tourist mid-snatch. She's tiny and fierce.
Packing Essentials
Layers are key in Paris. Mornings can be cool, afternoons warm. Pack a lightweight packable rain jacket that folds into its own pouch, comfortable walking shoes (you will walk a LOT), and always keep leak-proof snack containers and a water bottle for your kid. A slim portable charger is worth its weight in gold when you're navigating with your phone all day.
