Slovenia with Kids: Lake Bled, Ljubljana, and Europe's Hidden Family Gem
A real mom's guide to Slovenia with kids. Why Lake Bled, Ljubljana, and the Julian Alps are the easiest, most affordable family trip in Europe.

Slovenia is the trip every European traveler whispers about. "It's like Switzerland" they say. "But cheap. And empty. And the kids will love it." After our week of family travel through Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge, and the Soca Valley, I am here to confirm: every word is true. Slovenia with kids is the most underrated family trip in Europe.
The country is the size of New Jersey. You can drive coast to mountains in 2 hours. Castles, glacial lakes, dragons, gorges - it is a country built for the kid imagination. And it is half the price of neighboring Italy or Austria.
Best Time to Visit Slovenia with Kids
June and September are the family sweet spots. Lake Bled is warm enough for swimming, the Julian Alps are open for hiking, and the crowds are thinner than peak July or August. Late June has the warmest lake water and the most daylight.
July and August are gorgeous but Bled gets crowded and accommodation prices spike. April, May, and October are quieter and cooler - good for hiking, less ideal for swimming.
How Long Do You Need?
5 to 7 days is right for a first trip. Less than that and you are rushing through one of the most relaxing countries in Europe.
Sample 6-Day Itinerary
- Day 1: Arrive Ljubljana, walk old town, dinner at the riverside
- Day 2: Ljubljana day - Tivoli Park, dragon bridge, castle funicular
- Day 3: Drive to Lake Bled (45 minutes), Pletna boat to the island, evening walk around the lake
- Day 4: Vintgar Gorge in the morning, Bled Castle in the afternoon
- Day 5: Lake Bohinj day trip - quieter, wilder, Alpine swimming
- Day 6: Postojna Cave or Predjama Castle on the way back to airport
Getting Around Slovenia
Slovenia has good trains and buses, but renting a car gives you the country. The drive Ljubljana to Bled is 45 minutes, Bled to Bohinj is 30 minutes, Ljubljana to Postojna Cave is 45 minutes. Highways are excellent. Buy a vignette (highway sticker) for 16 euros at the border or first gas station - mandatory.
If you are not driving: Ljubljana to Bled is an easy 80-minute bus or 45-minute train. From Bled village to Bohinj is bus. You can do Slovenia without a car, but you will skip the prettier valley drives.
Top Family Activities in Slovenia
1. Lake Bled - The Iconic One
The fairy tale lake with a tiny island church in the middle. The kids' to-do list:
- Take a Pletna boat to the island. These are traditional flat-bottomed wooden boats rowed by a single oarsman. The trip is 15 euros per person and includes 30 minutes on the island. Climb the 99 steps (legend says new grooms must carry their brides up - kids find this hilarious) and ring the wishing bell inside the church.
- Walk around the lake. 6 kilometers, completely flat, paved trail. Doable in 90 minutes with stops. Strollers are fine.
- Swim at one of the lake beaches. Public beaches are free, lifeguards on duty, water is clear and warm in summer.
- Bled Castle. Perched on a cliff above the lake. Take the chairlift up (kids love it) and ride the mountain summer toboggan down - this is a guaranteed kid highlight.
- Eat a Bled cream cake. Slovenian specialty, custard and cream between two layers of pastry. Try it at Hotel Park where it was invented.
2. Vintgar Gorge
Twenty minutes from Bled. A 1.6 km wooden boardwalk hangs along the side of a river canyon, ending at a 13 meter waterfall. Kids of any age can do it - boardwalk is wide and railed. Get there before 10 am or after 3 pm to avoid crowds. Tickets are around 12 euros adult, 6 euros kids. Open April through October only.
3. Lake Bohinj
30 minutes past Bled, this is the wild Alpine cousin. Bigger, less crowded, surrounded by 7000-foot peaks. The water is colder but cleaner; kids can fish, kayak, paddleboard, or swim. Take the cable car up to Vogel for spectacular views. This is the day my kids asked if we could move to Slovenia.
4. Ljubljana - The Storybook Capital
The capital is a small, walkable, dragon-themed delight. Highlights with kids:
- Tivoli Park - massive central park with playgrounds, a small zoo, and the puppet theater (Lutkovno gledalisce Ljubljana)
- Ljubljana Castle via funicular - the funicular itself is the kid hook
- Dragon Bridge - four bronze dragons on a bridge over the Ljubljanica river. The dragon is the city's mascot, and kids will spot them everywhere
- Open Kitchen Market (Fridays March through October) - food market with kid-friendly fare
- Ljubljanica river boat ride - 45-minute lazy float through the city
5. Postojna Cave
One of Europe's most spectacular cave systems. You ride a small train for 2 km into the cave, then walk a 1.5 km loop through massive chambers. Includes the Vivarium where you can see olm salamanders (the famous Slovenian "baby dragons"). Kids 6 and up love it. Younger ones may find it cold and dark.
6. Predjama Castle
Ten minutes from Postojna. A 700-year-old castle built into the side of a cliff, with secret tunnels and a robber-knight legend. Looks straight out of Game of Thrones. Combo tickets with Postojna are a deal.
7. Soca Valley
If you have an extra day, drive to the Soca Valley for the most unbelievable turquoise river you will ever see. Older kids can raft (age 10+), younger ones can swim in shallow river beaches at Kobarid.
Where to Eat with Kids
Slovenian food is hearty, kid-friendly, and embarrassingly affordable. A family of 4 can eat a full sit-down dinner for 50 to 70 euros.
- Pizza everywhere. Slovenia takes pizza seriously - Italy is right next door. A wood-fired pizza is 8 to 10 euros.
- Stuffed dumplings (struklji) are like ravioli for kids who do not know they are eating cottage cheese.
- Bled cream cake. Mandatory.
- Gostilna (traditional inn) lunches. The set lunch (kosilo) is usually 8 to 12 euros for soup, main, salad, dessert.
- Burek - flaky pastry with cheese or meat, the kid breakfast champion at 2 to 3 euros.
What to Pack for Slovenia
- A Europe travel adapter (Slovenia uses Type C and F plugs)
- Hiking shoes for everyone - Vintgar Gorge and Bohinj trails are pebbly and damp
- An ergonomic hiking baby carrier if you have a toddler - the boardwalks are stroller-friendly but the wider Alpine trails are not
- Insulated water bottles - tap water is mountain spring quality
- A portable charger for long picture days at Bled
- Mineral sunscreen - Alpine sun is sneaky strong
- Swimsuits and quick-dry towels - both lakes and the Soca river
- A light fleece per kid - Alpine evenings cool fast even in July
- Compression packing cubes for moving between Ljubljana and Bled
- A small kids backpack for trail snacks and the gorge walk
Budget Tips for Slovenia
- Slovenia is cheap by EU standards. 30 percent less than Austria, 40 percent less than Italy. A 4-star hotel in Bled is 130 euros a night in summer.
- Apartments save money. A 2-bedroom apartment with kitchen is 100 to 150 euros a night - cheaper than two hotel rooms and you can cook breakfast.
- Free is the lake itself. Walking around Bled, swimming, picnicking - all free. The expensive activities (Pletna boat, castle, mountain coaster, Vintgar) are 12 to 25 euros each.
- Kids under 6 free at most attractions. Family discounts at Postojna and Bled Castle.
- Eat your big meal at lunch. Set menus are 8 to 12 euros for the same food that is 18 to 25 at dinner.
One Last Thing
Slovenia is what travelers dream Europe used to be. Quiet, friendly, gorgeous, kid-paced. The whole country feels like one of those storybook pages where the prince meets a dragon and someone bakes a cake. Take the boat to the island. Ring the wishing bell. Walk the gorge. And then fly home and be smug at parties about the trip nobody else has done yet.
