Loire Valley Castles with Kids: Family-Friendly French Royalty Tour
A real mom's guide to the Loire Valley castles with kids. Which chateaus are worth visiting, where to stay in Amboise, and how to avoid castle fatigue.

Three days into our Loire Valley trip, my eight-year-old looked at the moat at Chenonceau, looked at me, and said "Mom, are kings real?" That is the magic of the Loire Valley with kids. France's royal river is lined with 300 castles - actual moats, actual towers, actual secret staircases - and the country built half of them specifically to look like Disney before Disney existed.
That said: do not try to do all 300. The fastest way to ruin a Loire trip is to drag kids through six chateaux in three days. We have done the Loire twice with our kids, made the mistakes, and are here to tell you exactly which castles are worth it, which to skip, and how to fit in the riverside lazy lunches that make the trip a joy and not a forced march.
Best Time to Visit the Loire Valley with Kids
May, June, and September are perfect. The chateau gardens are in full bloom (Villandry's gardens are world famous). Crowds are manageable. Daylight runs to 9 pm so you can squeeze in a riverside picnic after castle visits.
July and August are warm and busy, with the bonus of nightly sound and light shows at Chambord and Blois. Spring break (April) and fall (October) are also lovely, just check ahead for castle hours - some have reduced winter schedules.
How Long Do You Need?
3 to 5 days is the sweet spot. Day trips from Paris exist (4 hours each way) but are exhausting with kids. Better to base in the valley and slow down.
Sample 4-Day Loire with Kids Itinerary
- Day 1: Train or drive to Amboise. Settle in, walk the riverbank, ice cream, dinner
- Day 2: Chateau de Chambord (massive scale, 440 rooms, horse show)
- Day 3: Chateau de Chenonceau in the morning + boat trip on the Cher river under the castle
- Day 4: Chateau de Cheverny (the inspiration for Tintin's Marlinspike Hall, kids can feed the hunting hounds at 11:30) and head home
You can absolutely do more castles. We just learned the hard way that 2 chateaux in a day with kids is the cap before meltdowns begin.
Where to Stay: Pick Amboise
The Loire stretches a long way, but for families the smart base is Amboise. It is centrally located between the major castles, has its own royal chateau, has restaurants, ice cream, a market, and a kid-friendly Leonardo da Vinci home (Clos Luce) where Leonardo lived his last years. The town is small enough to walk and big enough to keep kids busy on a rest day.
Other family bases worth considering:
- Tours - bigger city, train hub, easier from Paris
- Blois - good for castles in the eastern Loire
- Saumur - quieter, further west
Aim for an apartment or small chateau hotel. A 2-bedroom apartment in Amboise runs 100 to 160 euros per night.
Top Castles for Kids
1. Chambord (The Massive One)
The biggest, most over-the-top castle in the Loire. Built as a hunting lodge for King Francis I, it has 440 rooms, 365 fireplaces (one for every day of the year), and a double-helix staircase reportedly designed by Leonardo da Vinci where you can go up and down without ever crossing the other person.
For kids: the rooftop is a wonderland of chimneys and turrets, the grounds are vast (rent a kid bike or golf cart), and there is a daily horse show called Crinieres de Feu with stunts and birds of prey. Plan a half day minimum. Bring the travel stroller or a hiking carrier; the grounds are huge.
2. Chenonceau (The Pretty One)
The famous "Ladies' Castle" built across the River Cher on graceful stone arches. The most romantic castle in France, and surprisingly kid-friendly: the kitchens fascinate kids, the gardens are walkable, and you can rent rowboats and float right under the castle arches. That last part is the kid highlight of the entire Loire Valley. Allow 3 hours.
3. Cheverny (The Tintin One)
Smaller scale, beautifully furnished, and the model for Captain Haddock's mansion in Tintin. The big kid hook here: 100 hunting hounds living in a kennel on the grounds, and feeding time at 11:30 daily, where the dogs wait in formation for their meal. It is wild. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours.
4. Villandry (The Garden One)
The castle is fine. The gardens are extraordinary - geometric vegetable gardens, hedge mazes, a love garden in the shape of hearts. If your kid likes mazes, this is the visit.
5. Royal Chateau d'Amboise
If you base in Amboise, the local royal chateau is a half-day visit. Smaller scale, walkable from town. Leonardo da Vinci is buried in the chapel here. Worth it for the views over the Loire.
6. Clos Luce (Leonardo's House)
Right in Amboise. The home where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last 3 years. The grounds have life-size models of his inventions kids can climb on - flying machines, tanks, bridges. This was a hit with our 8-year-old who is in a Leonardo phase.
The Castles to Skip
Loire has 300 chateaux. Most are not worth it with kids. Skip:
- Azay-le-Rideau - beautiful but small and quiet, no kid hook
- Ussé - the Sleeping Beauty inspiration, but it is a slow self-tour with no real activities
- Langeais - good if you love medieval history, dull for kids
Two big crowd-pullers per day, max. Then ice cream and a riverbank walk.
Other Family Activities
Bike the Loire a Velo
The Loire by Bike (Loire a Velo) is a 900 km flat path along the river. You can rent kid bikes, trailers, or e-bikes in Amboise for half-day or full-day rides. We did a 12 km out-and-back along the river with our kids and it was a highlight.
Hot Air Balloon Rides
Yes, really. Several outfits run sunrise hot air balloon rides over the chateaux from April through October. Kids 6+ are fine. It is expensive (around 250 euros per person) but unforgettable.
Kids Cooking Classes
Several Loire chateau hotels offer family cooking classes - making French pastry, bread, or chocolate. Worth it for a rainy day.
Sound and Light Shows
Chambord and Blois both run summer evening sound and light shows projected on the castle walls. Bring a picnic, arrive an hour early, and let your kids run on the grounds before showtime.
Where to Eat with Kids
Loire Valley food is rustic French - cheese, river fish, mushrooms, goat cheese (the Loire is the chevre capital of France). Kids can eat:
- Rillettes de Tours - shredded pork pate on bread, weirdly kid-friendly
- Fouace - regional bread, often with dinner
- Goat cheese on a baguette - try Sainte Maure de Touraine, the local famous one
- Tarte Tatin - upside-down apple tart, invented in the Loire
- River fish (sandre or pike) - mild, flaky, kid-friendly
- Crepes - sweet for dessert, savory for lunch (galettes)
A casual dinner for a family of 4 runs 50 to 80 euros. Picnics in chateau grounds are common and welcomed (most have designated picnic areas).
Getting Around
You need a car for the full Loire experience. Pick up at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport or take the TGV to Tours/Saint-Pierre-des-Corps and rent there. Distances between major castles are 20 to 60 minutes. Roads are excellent.
If you are car-free, base in Tours and use the regional train to Amboise/Blois, then taxi or shuttle to nearby castles. Some chateau-to-chateau bike tours include luggage transfer.
What to Pack for the Loire Valley
- Real walking shoes - chateau grounds and gravel paths are vast
- A lightweight travel stroller for toddlers (Chambord grounds alone are over 5,000 hectares)
- An ergonomic hiking baby carrier for stairs in older castles
- A Europe travel adapter set
- Insulated water bottles - chateau visits are long, water fountains are sparse
- A portable charger for long castle days
- Mineral sunscreen for garden walks and bike rides
- A small kids backpack for snacks and a small toy or pretend sword
- Compression packing cubes for moving between castle towns
- Light layers - chateau interiors are cold even in July, gardens are warm
Budget Reality Check
For 4 days in the Loire with a family of 4:
- Apartment in Amboise: 400 to 640 euros
- Car rental: 120 to 200 euros
- Castle entrance fees: 10 to 19 euros adult, 7 to 16 euros child
- Food: 70 to 120 euros per day
- Total: 1300 to 2200 euros (excluding flights to Paris)
Family castle passes (a regional combo ticket) save money if you visit 4+ chateaux.
One Last Thing
The Loire is the rare French region that genuinely cares about kids. The chateaux have play guides, scavenger hunts, and treasure maps in English. The hounds at Cheverny do not perform - they just live there and eat at 11:30. The boats at Chenonceau do not have a tour guide, just oars. It is the un-Disney version of fairy tale magic, and somehow that makes it more magic. Pack the snacks and enjoy.
