Algarve with Kids: Portugal's Family Beach Paradise

A real mom's guide to the Algarve with kids. Best beaches, family resorts, when to visit, and why Portugal's south coast is the easiest beach trip in Europe.

Algarve with Kids: Portugal's Family Beach Paradise

The first time we landed in Faro and drove an hour west to Lagos, my husband and I looked at each other and said, "Wait, this is Europe?" The Algarve has 220 kilometers of golden cliffs, sandy beaches, sheltered coves, and a fish lunch under a vine trellis that costs less than a Costco hot dog.

The Algarve with kids is the easiest beach trip in Europe. Direct flights from US East Coast cities to Lisbon are common. Faro airport is small and friendly. Resorts are built for families. The Atlantic is bracing but swimmable, and the cliff coves shelter the smallest kids from waves. If you have not put it on your list, do that now.

Best Time to Visit the Algarve with Kids

May, June, and September are the family sweet spots. Water is warm enough (68 to 72 degrees), the sun is out 10+ hours, hotels are 30 to 50 percent cheaper than peak August, and the beaches are not packed.

July and August are stunning but crowded. Brits descend on the Algarve in massive numbers (it is to the UK what Florida is to the East Coast US), and prices can double. October has lovely warm days and 70 degree water but afternoons can shorten with shoulder rain.

Where to Stay: Picking Your Base

The Algarve is long. Where you base affects what you see. Three main zones:

Central Algarve - Albufeira / Vilamoura

The most touristy, most resort-heavy, easiest base. Lots of family hotels, water parks, and a flat layout that is stroller-friendly. Vilamoura is built around a marina with restaurants and gelato shops. Best for: first-time Algarve families, kids who want pools and water parks.

Western Algarve - Lagos / Praia da Luz / Sagres

The dramatic cliff scenery is here. Ponta da Piedade outside Lagos is one of the most beautiful coastal walks in Europe. Praia da Luz is a small protected beach village. Sagres is the windy, surf-y, end-of-Europe vibe with pine forests. Best for: scenic-priority families, kids who like exploring caves, surfer parents.

Eastern Algarve - Tavira / Olhao

Quieter, more authentic, fewer English speakers. Tavira is a stunning Moorish town with a Roman bridge. Beaches here are on barrier islands you reach by 5-minute ferry - sandy, flat, kid-paradise. Best for: families with older kids, parents who want a more local experience.

Best Beaches for Families

The Algarve's beach-coast is genuinely jaw-dropping. Our favorites for kids:

  • Praia da Luz - sheltered bay, low waves, restaurants right on the sand. Toddler heaven.
  • Praia da Marinha - voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Stairs down. Worth it.
  • Praia dos Pescadores (Albufeira) - in town, easy parking, kid-friendly
  • Praia da Falesia - 6 km of orange cliffs and golden sand near Vilamoura. Endless space to run.
  • Praia do Camilo (Lagos) - dramatic cliff cove, 200 wooden steps down. Older kids only.
  • Ilha de Tavira - barrier island beach, ferry over, completely different world
  • Praia da Rocha - long flat beach in Portimao, good for sandcastle building

Top Family Activities Beyond the Beach

1. Benagil Cave

The most photographed sea cave on the planet. You cannot walk into it - access is by boat or kayak from Praia de Benagil. Take a small boat tour (15 to 25 euros, 45 minutes) - they slow down inside the cave for photos. Kids over 5 should be fine on stable boats. SUP and kayak tours are for older kids.

2. Zoomarine

The Algarve's biggest theme park, with dolphins (they do still have shows; ethics call), a water park, rides, and presentations. A full day costs around 35 to 45 euros adult, 25 to 35 euros for kids. Sun protection is essential.

3. Ponta da Piedade Boat Tour from Lagos

Skip the kayaks if you have toddlers. A small motorboat tour (45 to 60 minutes, 20 to 25 euros) winds through the rock arches and grottos. Easier than parking and walking the cliff trail with little legs.

4. Loule Saturday Market

The biggest weekly market in the Algarve. Saturday mornings, in the town of Loule. Cheese, olives, Portuguese pottery, fresh figs and almonds. A real cultural break from beach days.

5. Slide and Splash Water Park

Near Lagoa. Families love this one - massive slides for older kids, gentle pools and small slides for younger. Plan 5 hours plus.

6. Tavira Old Town

Roman bridge, Moorish castle, kid-friendly seafood restaurants, and a 5-minute ferry to one of the best barrier-island beaches in Portugal. Spend a full day here.

Where to Eat with Kids

Portuguese food is shockingly affordable and kid-friendly:

  • Pasteis de nata - the famous custard tart, 1 to 1.50 euros each, every kid asks for them daily
  • Frango piri-piri - flame-grilled chicken with peri-peri sauce. Kid-portion no spice, adult portion with everything.
  • Cataplana - copper pot seafood stew. Great to share.
  • Polvo (octopus) - my kids love it, your kids might love it too
  • Bifana - pork sandwich, 3 euros, the lunch staple

A family of 4 can eat at a casual taverna for 35 to 60 euros. Resort restaurants run higher.

What to Pack for the Algarve

The Algarve sun is no joke - even in May, you can burn in 30 minutes. Pack like you are going to a 5-day Caribbean trip plus a layer for evenings:

  • Mineral sunscreen for everyone, applied generously and often
  • Insulated water bottles - tap water is fine and beach hydration is everything
  • A Europe travel adapter set (Portugal uses Type C and F)
  • Beach shade tent or large beach umbrella - midday Algarve sun reflects off white sand and cliffs
  • Water shoes for kids - several beaches have rocky entries or sea urchin patches
  • A lightweight travel stroller for cobblestone old towns like Lagos and Tavira
  • A portable charger for boat tours and beach days
  • Light sweaters for evenings - Atlantic breezes cool off after sunset
  • Quick-dry beach towels - hotel ones never come out of the room
  • Compression packing cubes - lots of swimsuits, regular clothes, beach gear
  • A small kids backpack per child for shells, snacks, and beach finds

Getting There and Around

Most international flights land in Lisbon. From there:

  • Connect to Faro: 50 minutes by air or 3 hours by car (rent at airport, drop in Faro)
  • Direct to Faro: Many European airlines fly into FAO. From the US, Lisbon is the gateway.
  • On the ground: Rent a car. Public transport works between major towns but the prettiest beaches are car-only.

Roads are excellent. The A22 toll road runs the length of the Algarve - get an EasyToll device at car rental.

Budget Reality Check

For a family of 4 in shoulder season, 7 days in the Algarve:

  • Flights from US: 2400 to 4000 dollars total
  • Lodging (4-star resort): 130 to 220 euros per night
  • Car rental: 150 to 300 euros per week
  • Food: 80 to 120 euros per day
  • Activities: 30 to 60 euros per day

Total per family: 4000 to 6500 dollars. Significantly cheaper than equivalent French Riviera or Italian coast.

One Last Thing

The Algarve is sneaky. You expect a beach trip and you get a beach trip plus storybook villages, world-class boat tours, lazy lunch culture, and a coastline that looks like someone hand-painted it. We have been three times. Each time we say it might be our last - too crowded, too built up, too discovered. Each time we go back. Just go.
